Activity Summary 2
During my second 100 hours as an intern at Hampton Family Practice, I continued to observe and learn a lot about the field of health administration and how it plays a role in the healthcare field. I continued to assist with the destruction and archiving of paper medical records at the practice. I also started to assist with a few other projects at the practice. The first of these was editing a spreadsheet of the providers’ call schedule. I helped with editing the call schedule spreadsheet so that it accurately represented the providers’ schedules for the next calendar year. I also began to help with collecting patient medical records requested by insurance companies for auditing. I would go into the patient chart in the EMR system and save requested records for a certain date range to upload to a website for the insurance company to audit. They audit the practice to ensure that the providers are charging the insurance company accurately for the visits that they have with their patients. I learned how to send messages through the EMR system to the providers’ nursing teams and started to send messages to them regarding patient prescription refill requests and pre-authorizations that are faxed to the practice from pharmacies. I observed and learned how the operators, schedulers, and front desk teams work together to provide great support to patients. The operators take all incoming calls at the practice and direct calls or send messages to the appropriate party. The schedulers take calls and schedule/reschedule appointments for patients. The front desk team checks in and checks out patients, making sure that all necessary paperwork, insurance information, and co-pay are obtained. I have learned a lot throughout my time as an intern at Hampton Family Practice. I look forward to using this knowledge to be successful in the field of health administration in the future.
