“Academic Growth”

I chose the image above as it represents my academic growth in this course. I will be discussing how I have personally grown throughout this course in this blog.

I had high expectations coming into this course. I wanted to learn a lot about cultures and how I could be culturally competent. I believe that I have developed and improved this skill in this course. The skill of intercultural competence is important to me and it will be very crucial for success in my future career as a Health Administrator. I think that I have achieved all five of the course objectives outlined in the syllabus for this course. I have become a lot more open-minded and culturally-sensitive because of what I have learned. If I took this course again, I would try to apply the information I learned to my personal life more than I have. I have developed better study habits this semester. This course has fostered a lot of personal and academic growth for me.

“Learning”

I chose the image above as it shows how learning occurs and I will be discussing what I have learned in this course in this blog.

I have learned a lot in this course, Cross-Cultural Psychology. Also, some of the information was a refresher and reinforcement of previous psychology courses that I have taken. My top three things that I have learned from this course are The Self-Determination Theory, the NEO personality test, and the concept of intercultural competence. I enjoyed learning about The Self-Determination Theory and how people from all cultures share basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, but that the specific ways in which these needs are met and expressed differ according to context and culture. The NEO personality test taught me more about different aspects of my personality. Lastly, the concept of intercultural competence was important for me to learn about as this skill will be essential for me to have in my future career as a health administrator. These were all topics covered in blogs in my ePortfolio.

Robert Kohl’s work “The Values Americans Live By” discussed in ATA 2 applied to the NEO personality test that I took and discussed for Blog #3. “The Values Americans Live By” discussed important American values. I found that the value that was most important to me was action and work orientation. This applies to the NEO personality test that I took and discussed my results on in Blog #3 as they both taught me more about myself and what I value as a person.

In my Introduction to Sociology course that I am currently taking, I learned about the different between race and ethnicity, as well as the difference between gender and sex. These concepts were also discussed in this course. These are base levels concepts that are important for both courses.

“50 Emotions”

I chose the emotions picture above as it depicts what I am discussing in this blog.

I personally am a very emotional person. It is very easy to tell how I’m feeling on any given day. A person can typically tell how I’m feeling by looking at my face as I wear my emotions on my face. I have encountered and interacted with people of many cultures throughout my life thus far. Everyone does not show their emotions the same way. In my interactions with people of different cultures then I, I have seen that they do not display their emotions like I. They may say that they are upset or stressed out, but you would not be able to tell by their facial expressions or actions. These behaviors are a lot different from my expectations. I typically expect others to act the way that I do as I feel that I am very similar in certain ways to others. The concept of universality explains my expectations of how people display their emotions, but it does not explain my experiences with how people actually display their emotions. On the other hand, cultural display rules do explain my experiences with how people display their emotions. Every culture typically has their own way of displaying their emotions based on their cultural display rules. Learning about how different cultures behave and display their emotions is very interesting and eye-opening.

“Hands on a Globe”

I chose this image for this blog as it displays inclusiveness.

Fairy tales do have a shared set of cultural norms and values. They typically reflect the cultural landscape at the time that they are created. The majority of the Disney movies portray gender stereotypes and egalitarian depictions. Viewing stereotyped or egalitarian depictions of gender roles will influence children’s ideas about gender. This is important to consider. An example of a Disney main character modeling egalitarian roles to young audiences is Mulan. She was portrayed as sensitive, submissive, highly tentative and troublesome, suggesting traditionally feminine roles. Although these traits displayed by Mulan could potentially have a negative influence on children, this movie actually had a very positive influence on me as a child. Mulan was a very powerful movie for me as a young girl. I aspired to be as strong and brave as she was. She inspired me and was a role model for me. A child’s age and maturity plays a large role in the amount of influence a movie will have on them.

“Self-Determination Theory”

I chose the image above as it defines the three psychological needs in the Self-Determination Theory that I will be discussing.

The Self- Determination Theory states that people from all cultures share basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, but that the specific ways in which these needs are met and expressed differ according to context and culture. I will be explaining how I satisfy these psychologically needs academically. I am very autonomously independent when it comes to my schoolwork. I satisfy my need for autonomy by being self-motivated and working hard on every assignment and exam that I do so that I can be successful and reach my goals. I satisfy my psychological need for competence by doing really well in all of my courses. This boosts my confidence and makes me happy. My success in school is very important to my positive self-esteem. Lastly, I satisfy my psychological need for relatedness by befriending and spending time with friends I have met through school. Building relationships with my peers is important to me and helps me feel connected to others.

“I am strong, beautiful, enough”

I chose the image above for this blog as it says has three traits on it that I believe describe me.

Who am I?

  1. I am smart
  2. I am kind
  3. I am friendly
  4. I am funny
  5. I am passionate
  6. I am beautiful
  7. I am strong
  8. I am caring
  9. I am hardworking
  10. I am successful

Numbers 1, 6, 7, 9, 10 are associated with independent construal of self. Numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 are associated with interdependent construal of self.

I think that I am more of an independent individual rather than interdependent.

English proverbs that reflect independent construal of self: “if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself” and “the squeaky wheel gets the grease.”

In the English language some proverbs that reflect the interdependent construal of self are: “no man is an island” and “two heads are better than one.”

I think that proverbs that reflect independent self were easier for me to think of as I believe that I am an a very independent person. I view myself as being separate and distinct from others and the social world and I do not rely on relationships with others.

“My Cross-Cultural Psychology Notes”

I chose this image, a picture of my notes, as this was a studying strategy that I used to be successful on the first exam.

I received a 100% on the first exam, so I did not miss any questions. I believe that my success on the first exam was due to my extensive preparation. Every week up until the exam I read the chapter in the textbook that was assigned and took notes in a notebook on them. I reviewed and studied my notes weekly. Every day of the week of the first exam, I made sure that I reviewed and felt confident with my knowledge on all topics listed. These studying strategies and habits helped me ace the first exam. Continuing these studying habits will help me to be successful on future exams.

Blog 3:
“Jaelyn’s Word Cloud”

I chose this image to represent this blog as I will be discussing aspects of my personality and this image has words that I believe describe my personality.

I took the NEO personality test and I believe that the results or answers that I got from it are accurate or consistent to my personality. In the N or Neuroticism category, I scored a T-score of 32, which means high. Being classified as high in this category means that I am a very sensitive and emotional person. I agree with this as I experience my emotions very deeply and I am a very compassionate person. In the E or Extraversion category, I scored a T-score of 18, which means average. Being classified as average in this category means that I enjoy being with other people, but value my privacy. This is very true for me. I like to go hang out with friends and do various activities every once in a while in my free time. But, it’s also very important to me to take time just to be by myself. In the O or Openness category, I scored a T-score of 27, which means average. Being classified as average in this category means that I like balancing new and old ways of doing things. I think this is accurate because there are some things that I am determined should be done the same way every time. Whereas, when doing other things, I am willing to take advice from others and do them a different way. In the A or Agreeableness category, I scored a T-score 25, which means low. Being classified as low in this category means that I am hardheaded, proud, competitive, and express my anger directly. I agree that this is true. I can be very determined to do things my way and not take advice from others. I also am very competitive and want to win and succeed. I can be very outspoken and voice my opinions about how I’m feeling towards somebody, even if it is negative. Lastly, in the C or conscientious category, I scored a T-score of 38, which means high. Being classified as high in this category means that I am conscientious and have high standards to achieve my goals. This is very accurate as I always am very conscientious of assignments and their due dates. I want to be very successful and have a good life, so I must work hard and achieve my goals.

Blog 2:
“My school supplies”

This is an image of my school supplies. I chose this image because in this blog I will be discussing my values that are relevant to career pursuits and my pursuit of higher education.

I have many life values that I take very seriously. Education, achievement and success, individualism, and efficiency and practicality are just few of them. These are not only very important to me personally, but they’re also going to be very useful to me in my future career as a Medical Administrator. My family obtaining college degrees and succeeding in their careers has made my pursuit of college education possible. They have provided a good example for me on how to be successful. I decided to pursue a college education because I believed that it was the best route for me to ultimately become successful in my career and life. My parents, peers, and previous teachers have supported my decision to further my education. Their support has very important to me. It has made my transition to this new chapter in my life very smooth and easy.

“Group of multiethnic business people brainstorming together.”

This an image of multiethnic people collaborating with one another in a business meeting. I chose this image because I believe that the knowledge I gain from this course will best aid me in my career in the medical field, where I will interact with people of different cultures everyday.

The course objective, “develop greater understanding of people from other cultures and skills for successfully interacting with them (intercultural competence)” is the reason I decided to take this course. The skill of intercultural competence will be very important to my success in my future career as a Medical Administrator. In this course I expect to learn as much as I can about the many different cultures of the world and how to best interact and communicate with them in my everyday life. My goal is to gain a much greater intercultural competence. To succeed in the course and get the most out of it, I will read the textbook chapters, take detailed notes, study hard, complete all assignments on time, and try my best on exams.
