Authentic Activity

Activity Name: Creating your chipotle order

Class Description: This activity is designed for an intermediate learner.

Time: 10-15 minutes

Objectives: By the end of the activity, students will be able to: answer yes/no Wh- questions, “would you…”, be able to insert degree complements into their statements when ordering food, make a polite request to the worker/ cashier

Materials: A picture of the Chipotle menu with all of the choices they have to create their orders.

Rationale: Outside of the classroom, students may visit a restaurant or vendor to eat, so they must know the proper etiquette and grammar to be used. They must be able to answer and understand Wh- questions while also being polite. The students must be able to comprehend what the server is saying while also being able to respond appropriately.

Tasks/ instructions:

  1. The teacher shows the students a list of options on the Chipotle menu and the order you chose your items in; carb, protein, salsa, etc. This menu will be handed out to the student the previous class before the activity takes place, so they have time to practice and come up with any questions they might have. If the student has a question, the teacher answers to the best of their ability using the menu if needed for explanation.
  2. The students find a partner and take turns asking the yes/no Wh- questions to create their orders, writing down their orders in the process. They use the menu to choose which items they want in their bowl, stating how much or how little, along with being polite to the server. They must create a dialogue between the sever and customer for each of their orders, then speak the written down phrases out loud to their partner. (The statements should include Wh- questions and answers, degrees of complements when stating how much or how little they want of an ingredient, and polite requests)
  3. As they are working, the teacher will be visiting groups and have time available to answer any questions or help with any difficult tasks.
  4. Once each pair has written their dialogues, they will present their dialogues in front of the class. While they are stating their orders in front of the class, the other students must write down what they think they are saying. At the end they will see how similar the real dialogue is compared to what the class thought.

Appendix B: Student Worksheet of Yes/no Wh- questions

Using the menu from Chipotle, work with a partner to create dialogues with one student taking the order and the other student ordering. Then switch roles and create another dialogue. Each student will have the opportunity to create the dialogue from both the server and customer point of view.
