My first goal for my internship experience is to become more knowledgeable about the hiring process. As someone who has been in the management field, hiring the right individuals is vital for work moral. Talking to Amber over the years at Old Dominion, she has told multiple stories about how choosing the right employee is one of her most important, but sometimes overlooked, jobs. At Medical Associates there are three new employees starting, and the potential for a third hire. These individuals include one PA, one NP, and one nurse- with the potential of another nurse. I will get firsthand experience on credentialling, inputting pay information, the interview process, expectations to set for myself while interviewing such as questions that I hear that I may never have thought to ask.

               My second goal is to learn to create and maintain a budget. With an independent organization, budgeting is imperative as all inflow and outflow of money falls back directly on the management of the practice. On my first day, there was a meeting between the two owners and Amber, which I was able to sit in on, where they discussed dates and expectations for an overall budgeting meeting. In this meeting they agreed to create graphs on spending tracking, insurance pay ins, ect. to give a visual idea on what goals can be set to achieve to improve in the 2024 year.

               My third goal is to get a better understanding of insurance companies. I hope to learn more about insurance claims, how we determine codes to input for billing, contract negotiations, and rejected insurance payments. I do not understand a whole lot of insurance information. I feel as though my schooling has not answered all the incidents I could potentially come across during my future career. Seeing these challenges and how to communicate effectively and efficiently to benefit the practice and the patient’s.
