SPAN 101

Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational Modes of Communication

Exploring Culture

Music was a great tool that helped me understand the language a lot better. Listening to music is a daily activity for me so when I switched my playlist up to add more Spanish artists I started to pick up the language a little better. The beats in the songs were the same as American music however you ca tell where the artist stuck true to their hispanic roots in some of the songs as well. One of the songs I am referring to is Hawai by Maluma. This songs was definitely different from what I normally listen to but it added a different dimension to what I normally do.

Engaging in Communities

Engaging communities is important for having some one to rely on. During this 2020 year there has been a lot of separation and distance due to Covid-19. People across the world has felt a sense of loneliness and having a community close to you will let people not feel lonely any more. Having a community is essential especially in times like today where you could lose anyone at any time. A good community will help you an endeavors that may arise in any circumstance.

Interpersonal Communication

There were a few times my Spanish skills were needed during this semester. When my girlfriend received two Spanish speaking families come to her job. For support, I helped her relearn some of the Spanish that she took a while back. It was fun learning a new language while assisting someone else. This was one of the unconventional ways I used my Spanish skills this semester.

Presentational Speaking

I have had to link up with a few students outside of class to practice our Spanish.

The times I had met with my fellow classmates was an overall good experience. There were times we struggled to talk because of the internet connection but we were able to push through the struggle to get the assignment done. Working and learning from different people definitely helped in my Spanish learning experience.

Presentational Writing

I enjoyed reading about the Spanish culture with this course. I especially enjoyed reading about the different universities and how they conducted the school year compared to American ways of learning.

Interpretive Listening

Outside of my music listening and practice with my classmates, I would use the VHL system. The VHL helped me with specific words during my study time. Hearing the words being pronounced correctly constantly whenever I study helped tremendously this semester.

Interpretive Reading

Most of the stories we learned were highlighting a lot about Spanish culture in many ways. One highlight is attributed to how their families are really close and connected to each other. I found that piece of knowledge to be valuable and neat to learn. I also enjoyed reading how families celebrate birthdays with piƱatas, it reminds me how my birthday used to be when I grew up in California.
