Watch this video and pay attention to the way that movies distort hackers. Hacker Rates 12 Hacking Scenes In Movies And TV | How Real Is It? – YouTube After watching the video, write a journal entry about how you think the media influences our understanding about cybersecurity.
After watching this video, I have come up with some possible ways that the media influences our understanding of cybersecurity. One of them is that movies push the idea that hackers are only after big corporations. They are often trying to take down government agencies, secret services, companies, or big name politicians. I believe this can give the impression that the average computer user has “nothing important” that hackers would want, giving them a false sense of invincibility. The truth is, if you have money, you are the target for hacking at any time.
Another example is that many hackers in movies penetrate a network or device with ease. Occasionally there is a struggle to do this, but almost always the hackers are successful in penetration. This may give users the impression that no matter what, hackers will break into their networks. In reality, there are several precautionary measures that can prevent even advanced hackers from stealing your data.
Finally, cybersecurity and hackers can be misinterpreted as simply a “matrix” of numbers in a digital world. In reality, hacking is much less advanced looking as it often involves using a regular computer with virtual machines and computer terminals to write code in. Though it would look very cool, the 1s and 0s matrix scheme is not quite how cybersecurity works. The media may influence this type of thinking and more.
