For this assignment, I had to visit privacyrights.org to research the privacy information provided by their website.
Researchers could utilize this publicly available information for several purposes. On this website, a full-disclosure report of the California Consumer Privacy act and what it entails. It shows consumers how their data is being used and what rights they have surrounding their privacy. Researchers could use this data to assess their own company or organization’s privacy regulations, as according to the website, there is overwhelming support for California’s stronger privacy laws. They could also utilize the website’s data breach chronology report to assess the different types of breaches that occur and their frequencies.
There are also several overviews of different laws and acts that are in place that are publicly available. Some of these include ‘HIPAA, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act” and much more. Researchers could use this to study the current standing of data breach and privacy laws in order to stay up to date on privacy laws. There is also a data brokers database that entails which companies utilize consumer information and sell it to other companies. This provides insight to users and researchers alike on who openly discloses what they do with your information.
There are also several articles on advocacy, entailing modern details of what real-world groups are doing to advocate for consumers. This includes deletion acts, which pushes for an “accessible deletion mechanism” for consumers to openly delete data that is collected from them. Researchers can utilize these tools to stay up to date on the most recent changes in data privacy. I believe this is a wonderful tool researchers can use to broaden their knowledge and stay up to date on data privacy.
