FINAL REFLECTION

Your First Semester

  • Tell us how you have grown from the beginning of the semester to now.

One way I believe I have grown this semester is through my social life. I have normally always been pretty quiet and never went out much, but now I find myself being very extroverted and not afraid to talk to people and be myself. I think this has helped me academically as well because I am no longer afraid to ask questions or ask for help when I need it. It has also helped me with my time management skills in being able to have fun but still focus on school so I don’t go crazy.

  • What were your expectations for this year? Did this semester’s experiences meet your expectations? Explain.

For this year I expected to do well in my classes but to struggle in Chemistry. At the beginning I struggled a little bit but over time I was able to figure it out and I am no longer struggling. I learned to put in the work and I am very proud of myself for putting that first and realizing my problems early.  I also believe I can end this semester with a grade I am proud of.

  • What is something you wish you knew 14 weeks ago?

14 weeks ago I wished I knew how to split up my time between my classes better. Recently I have been so focused on chemistry that I let my math slip. I did really well in chemistry but I could have done better in math like I normally  do if I split up my time between the two better than just focusing on chemistry.

Study Habits

  • How much time do you spend studying for each class now vs. at the beginning of the semester?

At the beginning of the semester I spent an accumulated time of 2 hours and now at the end semester I think I’ve spent about 4-5 hours of accumulated study time.

  • How have your study habits changed?

The only things that have really changed about my study habits is where I study and how much I study. In the beginning I never really went to the library but now I go quite often and study for longer and more frequent periods of time.

  • Tell us about a resource that you have used/learned about this semester that will assist you next semester.

One resource that I have been using lately is the writing center, they have aided me in writing a research paper and I found them to be very helpful and it is definitely a resource I will be using quite often.

  • What study habits/techniques will you use going into next semester?

One study habit I will use next semester is what I like to call the brain dump. It is essentially where I write out everything I can possibly remember about a unit and that helps me pinpoint how much I know and what topics need more work.

Parallel Plan

This semester we had presentations from different majors in the College of Health Sciences as well as from different majors on campus. This was to give you an idea for possible parallel majors to your current intended major.

Which two other majors would you be most interested in? Why?

Two other majors that I’d be interested in are Biomechanics and Occupational therapy. I chose biomechanics because I have found data analysis of the body really interesting and I like the idea of finding issues before they get worse to improve people’s health. Then occupational therapy also interested me because my mom was an occupational therapist, which she really liked. And I also liked being able to rehabilitate people and help them begin to get their life back.

What benefit is there to having a parallel plan (or two) in place?

One benefit is that if you ever change your major there is a big possibility that you have already taken the courses necessary so it shouldn’t make the process that much longer.

How could one or both of these two majors benefit your current intended major?

By doing one or both of the two I can take more courses that can be valuable to my career choice, they help me become a specialist or give me a really good understanding of all areas in my occupation.

Think about the job postings you submitted for Part 1, and the knowledge, skills, and abilities you’ll need.  Did these jobs match what you had in mind for your dream job? Did you find your dream job? Describe the similarities and differences.

From the 3 job postings you found, choose one job you want the most, and use the list of skills required for the job of interest. Identify skills you already have and identify skills you are still building or need more experience performing. Discuss options to sharpen or learn the skills you will need to gain.

Yes, the communication and empathy skills are skills that I already possess, and I will work for the education skills. I do believe that I have found my dream job in Physical therapy, the quiz told me that being a practitioner is the perfect job for me and while yes it is a nice job I would like a more direct focus on the patients with one on one patient time.

I liked job posting 2 the most because I liked the salary and they had a great amount of benefits that make it easy for me to have a life outside of work. I currently already have the communication and empathy skills required for this job and I plan to get CPR certification sometime in this next year. Some options to learn the other skills are to really focus on school and make sure to keep my focus on all types of therapies and not just be a specialist so it will broaden my knowledge and chances of getting a job.
