CYSE 100: Cyber Explorers and University Orientation: A Foundation for Success
CYSE 100 provided a strong foundation in both cybersecurity and university life. Through interactive experiences, I explored majors in the School of Cybersecurity, learned about academic resources, and developed my ePortfolio to reflect on my first semester. This course also helped me identify my learning style and improve study techniques for future success.
CyberOps 2024

CyberOps was a fun and interactive event created for students from IT based majors to test their skills and knowledge in multiple capture the flag (CTF) structured challenges from decryption to following packets in Kail Linux. My favorite part of the experience was the CTF portion. At this event I was able to network with my peers. We were working together and sharing our different experiences with one another. I found many of the CTF questions to be quite challenging. This is mostly because I am only a freshman and hadn’t been introduced to a good chuck of materials that were in the CTF modules. For example, the dancing man decipher was a very challenging question. Trying to decipher each letter based on hand and leg positions, rotations, and flags was time consuming and frustrating, but I did enjoy the challenge. Unfortunately, I missed the guest speakers, but I heard they had good insightful presentations, and I hope to see different speakers next year. CyberOps was a lot different than what I imagined. I assumed it was a large event that different schools came out to compete in, but it was the exact opposite. The environment was quiet and intimate, which I prefer because I was able to get help when needed and felt as though my time was valued. Overall, CyberOps was an amazing opportunity, and I feel bad for those who missed it. I will definitely be attending in the upcoming year.
Fortune 500 Presentation- Costco
One of the main objectives of CYSE 100 was to raise awareness of the widespread and often unexpected presence of cybersecurity in various industries. Along with two of my peers, I was tasked with researching a Fortune 500 company and evaluating its need for cybersecurity. We chose Costco, a company that is relevant to all of our lives, as our focus. This research opportunity not only deepened my understanding of the critical role cybersecurity plays at Costco but also broadened my perspective on the vast array of opportunities within the cybersecurity field.
