IT150G- Basic Info Literacy & Research
Basic Information Literacy & Research course equips students with the skills to identify, evaluate, and organize information from various sources for academic and professional purposes. It focuses on determining the scope of research, using information ethically, and critically assessing different information structures. Students also learn to address legal, social, and ethical issues related to information use while developing the ability to synthesize and communicate data clearly in research projects.
Project: Research Paper
Research Questions

Concept Map
Figure 1.2

The initial step in developing a comprehensive research paper involves identifying a research problem. To facilitate this, we were instructed to create a concept map to connect ideas related to our major with potential research topics, displayed in Figure 1.2. Through this process, we explored relevant subtopics that helped generate possible research questions, as illustrated in Figure 1.1. From this list, I selected the question that resonated most with me: “Does AI in Education increase Student Knowledge?”
Outline
Building upon our preparatory work, we developed a detailed outline to serve as a roadmap for crafting our initial draft. The purpose of this outline was to further refine and clarify the key questions that needed to be addressed in order to draw a well-supported and plausible conclusion. This structured approach ensured a focused and organized exploration of the research topic.
First Draft
“1. This is an excellent paper, with a very interesting topic.
Comment from Elizabeth Simpkins to fix rough draft
2. Yes, this paper has the correct format.
3. Yes, the research question is non-biased and is at the end of the introduction.
4. The background paragraph is very descriptive abut the background of the topic including information about AI and how it has been used in education in the beginning of its use, up until its uses now. There is also a nice transition into the problems of the topic.
5. There are a total of 14 in-text citations. They are all correct. I made a comment for one of them, but since it still includes the last name, it is fine.
6. From what I counted, there are 10 references. I made one comment about making it a little easier to read them, but they all look to be in proper formatting.
7. Yes, the concept map was removed.
8. The conclusion thoroughly summarizes the findings and provides a nice overview of this research.”
Final Draft
Comment from Ziwei Ye, professor, on the final submission of the semester“This paper is well-researched and organized, with a clear introduction that highlights the importance of AI in education. The visual data (e.g., graphs on pages 2 and 4) effectively supports your arguments, and the comparison between AI and traditional tutoring shows strong critical thinking.
To improve, refine APA citations for consistency. Additionally, tightening some paragraphs would enhance clarity. Overall, this is a strong paper with thoughtful insights.”

This represents the outcome of my research efforts throughout the semester in IT150G. On the left-hand side, you can see my initial rough draft, which is contrasted with my final draft on the right. The significant differences between the two highlight not only the hard work and dedication of my professor but also the valuable insights and skills I gained throughout the course. This progression underscores the growth and refinement of my research and writing capabilities.
Assignments
In this class along with writing a research paper we learned tactics to analyze material to find proper sources to use when conducting research on any topic or field.
The library assignments provided necessary knowledge to find, analyze, and check all sources. (Right)
Homework assignments to further work with knowledge taught in the classroom and check for student understanding. (Left)
