Windows Operating Systems

Why This Skill Matters?

Windows operating systems are used by the majority of businesses, making them one of the most important skills for anyone entering IT. Learning how to manage Windows systems has helped me understand how organizations create user accounts, secure devices, troubleshoot issues, and maintain reliable networks.

Active Directory User Management Lab

Problem

The goal of the lab was to build an Active Directory environment that allowed users to authenticate securely while organizing accounts into the correct organizational units.

Action

I installed and configured Active Directory, created organizational units, added user accounts, reset passwords, assigned permissions, and verified that users could successfully log into the domain. Throughout the lab I also learned how account management affects both security and daily business operations.

Result

Completing this lab showed that I understand the fundamentals of Windows Server administration and Active Directory management. These are skills commonly used in Help Desk, System Administration, and Identity and Access Management positions.

Windows Hardening Lab

Problem

The lab required securing a Windows computer against common security risks while maintaining normal system functionality.

Action

I configured Windows security settings, reviewed user permissions, enabled security features, and applied recommended hardening techniques to reduce potential vulnerabilities.

Result

This project demonstrated my understanding of Windows security and showed that I can balance usability with security while protecting business systems.

CompTIA Security+ Windows Administration Preparation Labs

As part of my preparation for the CompTIA Security+ certification, I completed a series of hands-on Windows administration labs that focused on the security tasks commonly performed by IT support and cybersecurity professionals. These labs reinforced classroom concepts by allowing me to apply them in a virtual Windows environment.

Problem

The objective of these labs was to complete real-world Windows administration and security tasks that are essential in entry-level IT and cybersecurity roles. The scenarios included managing local user accounts, configuring password and account lockout policies, reviewing NTFS file permissions, using Windows administrative tools, securing operating system settings, and troubleshooting authentication and access issues.

Action

I worked through each lab by configuring Windows security settings, creating and managing user accounts, assigning permissions based on the principle of least privilege, reviewing security logs, and using built-in Windows administration tools to troubleshoot problems. I also practiced identifying security misconfigurations and applying recommended best practices to strengthen the operating system while maintaining normal functionality.

Result

Completing these labs strengthened my understanding of how Windows systems are managed and secured in professional environments. They demonstrated my ability to perform common Help Desk and junior system administration tasks while applying cybersecurity best practices. These experiences have increased my confidence in supporting Windows users and provide a strong foundation for future roles in IT Support, System Administration, and Identity and Access Management.
