The importance of learning Spanish

Now I understand that some people may struggle to learn a new language. I truly believe that it’s a worthwhile effort for everyone. I think that everyone can honestly benefit from learning to communicate in a second language and that the world opens up in a new way once you can manage it. Even though I grew up speaking it unlike others once I moved to the U.S. at a young age I forgot most of it. So my attempts to relearn Spanish taught me a lesson of greater importance than the language itself. Learning a second language is an important lesson to learn in life. So much so that in high school they require you to take one year of it at the minimum. I do not disagree with its importance, but it is not an easy task to ask of.

I have learned so much this year and especially this quarter in Spanish. The last quarter began with learning vocabulary concerning the arts and culture. I was able to talk about ways to express myself and the types of art that I love. We then went on to cover chapters about places around town and giving directions. It was very helpful to learn how to give directions in Spanish. In the last topics, I learned how to describe and talk about travel and transportation as well as talk about careers and the future. I thought that topic was the most beneficial in learning how to describe our future. This year in Spanish, I have learned so much new vocabulary and new verb tenses.

It is so amazing that I have learned how to conjugate verbs in the past, present, and future tenses as well as other supporting tenses. It makes things so much easier to finally be able to communicate what I want to say. As well as learning about new verb conjugations, we also covered basic grammar concepts such as direct and indirect objects and pronouns. These things are essential to mastering the Spanish language. I feel very confident about my ability to speak and understand Spanish after this year Spanish. Although sometimes, it takes me a minute to think about what I want to say, I can usually converse without much difficulty. I would like to improve my ability to understand the Spanish of native speakers. That gives me more trouble.
