Study Habits
For each class, I spend about 2-3 hours studying per week. It mainly depends on the class because I spend more time studying for some classes but less time for other classes depending on how difficult the class is. For some classes like biology, I need to spend more time because that is a difficult class for me, and I want to achieve the best grade possible. I usually study in my room on my bed or a just sit on a desk. During the day, I can be distracted especially from my phone, but staying focused and motivated helps remove these distractions. I usually do my studying early morning or at night. I feel like I am the most focused during these times because it is when my home is quiet, and I am able to concentrate and accomplish a lot of tasks.
Learning Style
The study techniques that work best for me are taking notes, making visuals, and watching course related videos. For classes like biology, math, and sociology, I usually take notes and try to understand the concepts, so I don’t have to memorize and keep recalling those notes. New study techniques I used this semester was study groups and changing my style of note taking by becoming more creative.
Transition to College
College has been mostly what I had expected it to be. Something I didn’t expect was that the amount of free time I would have especially between classes. I just have to utilize all that free time and use it productively. The most surprising thing I experienced this semester is how my classes are easier than I thought. In high school, I was told that classes would just get harder, but I am taking some courses right now that are easier than courses in high school. I am sure that my classes will get more difficult later on, but I didn’t expect that my classes this semester would be easier than I thought. I commute to classes, but I haven’t faced any difficulty because I only live 5 minutes away from campus and I also only have one class on campus.
Connecting to Campus
At first, it was a challenge to find a LEAP job this semester, so I got in contact with the CDS, and they helped me with my resume and helped me find a job. My advisor has helped me a lot this semester by giving me more information about my major, helping me plan for my futures years in college, and giving me advice on how to best achieve my goals. So far, I have attended the pre-health club’s meeting because I am interested in the medical field, and they offer a lot of advice and opportunities for pre-health majors. I also attended the VBEMS meeting because I am interested in becoming an EMT.
