Parallel Major

  • List of majors from the “mymajors” quiz: Health Sciences, Nutrition, Healthcare Administration, Pre-Health Sciences and Nursing. These were the top results from the quiz.
  • My parallel major is a Biological Sciences program called Biomedical Sciences Major – Pre-Health Concentration.
  • I chose this as my parallel major because it would specifically prepare me for medical school which I intend to go to. By majoring in Biomedical Sciences, I will be prepared to take on the rigor of medical school and beyond. It will offer me opportunities that will give me the experience needed to put me above my peers and competitors when applying for medical school. This major interests me because it is pre-health concentrated, and the classes for this major will give me a lot of insight into what classes in medical school would be like. I also like this major because it is not highly focused in one subject like Biology, but it has course from a range of science-related subjects which would prepare me medical field.
  • Some interesting facts about Biomedical Sciences is that this is a new major, and this is the first year (2020) that they are offering students to major in it. ODU is one of only a few colleges in Virginia that offers this major. This is the only major that substantially prepares students for many graduate programs and schools such as medical, dental, veterinary, nursing, physician’s assistant and so on. Biomedical Sciences is the only degree which combines science courses with medical courses.
  • Getting a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences is not enough to get a job, but it does open doors for people who want to pursue graduate school. People who major in this degree do not intend to work right after obtaining the Biomedical Sciences degree; instead, they intend to go on to graduate school like medical school or PA school. This major opens the door for so many careers in the field of medicine. By getting this degree, students are more prepared and experienced to go to graduate school for a career of their own interest.
  • The additional classes I will need to take for this degree are the 200, 300, and one 400 level biology classes, precalculus and calculus, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and introduction to information literacy.
  • To gain professional experiences for this area of study, I would stay in contact with the advisors, attend annual Biomedical Science seminars, volunteer and do internships at medical facilities, and shadow medical professionals.
  • The advisor for this major is Terri Mathews.
