Pre-Semester Reflection

Major/Career

What is your intended major and why did you choose this major?

My intended major is Nuclear Medicine Technology. I chose this major because it something that stood out to me and is similar to radiology—a study which I’ve had an interest in since high school. I also chose to major in Nuclear Medicine Technology because it gives me the possibility to get a job right after college, just in case my plans to go to medical school don’t work out.

What skills or abilities do you possess that make this major/career a good choice for you?

In high school, I was in a program that allowed me to take special health related courses such as anatomy and physiology, sports medicine, and an Emergency Medical Responders class. I believe that my knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, and my EMR certification makes Nuclear Medicine Technology a great choice for me.

What experience, if any, do you have that relates to your chosen major/career?

I have experience volunteering at DePaul Medical Center in various department such as the OR, ICU and the Ambulatory Care. I also have experience studying anatomy and physiology on cadavers at EVMS which I believe will be helpful for my intended major.

In what type of setting would you prefer to work?

I prefer to work in a hospital setting.

What are your career goals (in 5 years/in 10 years)?

In 5 years, I hope to be applying to or already be in medical school. In 10 years, I hope to be completing my residency to become a sport medicine physician.

Transition to college

What do you expect to be the biggest difference between high school and college?

I expect that the biggest difference between high school and college is that I have to be more independent. I should be more aware of due dates and completing my assignments on time because most classes in college don’t extend due dates.

What do you expect to be your biggest challenge this semester?

Since it’s my first semester in college, I expect that a perfect transfer from high school to college will be my biggest challenge. I will find keeping my grades up and following my new schedule challenging.

If you live on campus: What do you expect to be your biggest challenge with moving away to college?

OR  If you commute to class: What do you expect to be your biggest challenge with commuting to campus?

With commuting to campus, I expect getting to class early or on time to be my biggest challenge.

Do you have a job/ or plan to get a job? If so, where? How many hours will you be working per week?

I plan to get a LEAP job. If I do, then I will be working up to 20 hours per week.

Study habits

Is there a difference between “studying” and “homework”?  Explain your answer.

Yes, there is a difference between “homework” and “studying”. “Homework” is just completing tasks that were assigned from teachers. “Studying” is actually taking the time to attain knowledge needed to pass a class. This knowledge could be helpful even after completing college/school.

How much time do you plan to spend studying for each class every week? I spend about 15-20 hours studying every week.

For which class do you expect to spend the most time studying? I expect that I will spend the most time studying for Biology.

For which class (other than HLTH 101) are you expecting to spend the least amount of time studying? I expect that I will spend the least time studying for College Algebra.

Where do you plan to study? I plan to study at home.

What potential distractions can you anticipate?  I anticipate that my phone, the TV, or other family members could be potential distractions.

How do you plan to avoid these distractions? I plan to avoid these distractions by going into a separate room and requesting my family members to lower their voices only while I’m studying.

What time of day is your best time to study and why?

The best time for me to study is early morning or late at night because that’s when I’m that least distracted and I can concentrate better.

This Fall, you are in online courses, some of which do not meet at a specific time, how do you plan to manage all of your assignments?

I plan to look at the course material and assignments every day so that I could manage my time better and complete those tasks before the due date.

Think about all of your commitments i.e. job, family, social life (from a distance and wear your mask! #ReignResponsibly). How do you plan on balancing your various commitments?

I plan to utilize my time management skills to balance my various commitments and organize my schedule.

Learning style

What specific study techniques do you think work best for you?

Studying in a quiet room works best for me. To learn course content easily, I watch course related videos because reading makes it harder for me to retain information.

Do you use different study techniques for different classes?  Provide examples.

Yes, for example, I watch videos for Biology, I use the audiobook for sociology, and I learn math by looking at the teacher do examples.
