While watching the TED talk presented by Jean Kilbourne, I was honestly baffled at how disrespectful the ads that people allow to be put out is just so hurtful to women and it is literally an everyday thing. It is unfortunate because the ads make it seem like women need to be up to par to get a man and manipulate their bodies so they can be what society deems as beautiful. I think that today it is way worse because women are losing their lives because they want to look like the next and girls who are pictured on the covers of magazines. An important topic that Kilbourne spoke on, is how colored women are pressured to turn to caucasian features and neglect the features that are inherited with their own nationalities and races. She also reflected on how girls as young as eight years old start to be pressured to look a certain way due to society values. What I think is sad is that women with daughters do not teach them to be proud and learn to love themselves the way they are and uplift their self-esteem to decrease their subjectiveness to the pressures of society. I think this society as a whole need to be more mindful of what they let out to children and ads that they claim are good and helpful to women. I do want to be more mindful of the companies that are releasing advertisements like these and report them because they are very offensive and should not be allowed in public.
