- What is your intended major and why did you choose this major? My intended major is dental hygiene. I chose this major because ever since I was a child I loved going to the dentist. So, then I did some research and found out that it seems like the perfect field for me!
- What skills or abilities do you possess that make this major/career a good choice for you? The skills that I possess that makes this field perfect for me is that I am a driven hands on learner.
- What experience, if any, do you have that relates to your chosen major/career? I don’t have any experience in the dental hygiene field, but I do go for a check-up every 6 months!
- In what type of setting would you prefer to work? The setting I would like to work in is a pediatric office because although you’re doing a professional job, you’re in a kid-friendly environment.
- What are your career goals (in 5 years/in 10 years)? My career goal in the next 5 to 10 years is to graduate from dental school and start to work at a pediatric dental office.

- Transition to college
. What do you expect to be the biggest difference between high school and college? The biggest difference I see between high school in college is that you’re more free and you have to be more accountable for yourself.
a. What do you expect to be your biggest challenge this semester? The biggest challenge that I think I’m going to encounter this semester is being prepared for my classes with not really having classes in high school following the break of COVID-19.
b. If you live on campus: What do you expect to be your biggest challenge with moving away to college? Honestly, I do not think I’m going to have any trouble moving away to college.
c. OR If you commute to class: What do you expect to be your biggest challenge with commuting to campus?
d. Do you have a job/ or plan to get a job? If so, where? How many hours will you be working per week? I plan to get a job for work study and plan not to work more than 15 hours a week.
- Study habits
. Is there a difference between “studying” and “homework”? Explain your answer. I believe that there’s a difference between studying and homework because homework is just what the teacher gives you to help aide the lesson, but studying I believe you do it, so you actually get good retention of the material.
a. How much time do you plan to spend studying for each class every week? I plan to study my materials for an hour 4 times a week.
i.For which class do you expect to spend the most time studying? I think the class that I will spend the most time studying for is chemistry.
ii.For which class (other than HLTH 101) are you expecting to spend the least amount of time studying? The class that I expect to do the least amount of studying for is my theatre class.
b. Where do you plan to study? I plan to study mostly in the Webb center or in the Library.
.What potential distractions can you anticipate? The distractions I will encounter the most is just being busy on my phones.
i.How do you plan to avoid these distractions? I plan to turn my phone off while I’m doing work or studying.
c. What time of day is your best time to study and why? I feel like my best time to study will be in the afternoon, sometime around six o’clock.
d. This Fall, you are in online courses, some of which do not meet at a specific time, how do you plan to manage all of your assignments? I’m starting to figure out how I’m going to deal with these classes, but the plan is to attend the office hours twice a week to keep up with my professor and makes sure I keep up with all my work.
e. Think about all of your commitments i.e. job, family, social life (from a distance and wear your mask! #ReignResponsibly). How do you plan on balancing your various commitments? I think you can still have fun and be safe, just stay masked up and washed up.
- Learning style
. What specific study techniques do you think work best for you? The best retention mechanism I think I’ve grown on to is writing out what matters most and using flashcards.
a. Do you use different study techniques for different classes? Provide examples. I feel like I use the same studying mechanisms all the way around, writing out the main ideas and using flashcards for memory.
- Connecting to campus
. Name one academic resource at ODU you can use to help you earn “As” this semester. I think the number one thing that will help me this semester is to find me a good study group so we can bounce ideas off one another.
a. Name one non-academic resource at ODU and how it can help you this semester. I think oner non-academic resource that will help me this semester is my air pods so I can drown out the extra things.
b. Name one resource you think you will use this semester. A resource I think I’ll use this semester is the tutor, although I have to find out if its virtual or in person.
c. Name one resource at ODU you would like to learn more about, and why. I’m not sure, I need to do more research into the things I’m surrounded by.
d. In high school, what clubs, organizations, or activities did you participate in, if any? Honestly, I ran and participated in many clubs and organizations like DECA, FBLA, FCCLA, Heart 2 Heart, and many other.
e. Is there a club or organization you plan to join this semester and what do you expect to gain from this experience? If not, why not? I will look into clubs and organizations, but as of right now I am not hip to what’s here.
