One leadership opportunity I engaged through the MPH program would be in a group project that we worked on with the dental hygienist students. This project was called the Inter-Professional Experience and we collaborated to create a van to provide dental care and medical information for free to immigrants/ refugees that may otherwise go without care due to lack of insurance. Through this project, I learned how to work with others in a different field to reach a common goal. This impacted my learning by helping me be more open-minded and think about in what other ways situations could be handled when working as a team.
Another leadership opportunity I had through this program was with my Service-Learning Project. This project allowed me to have free-range on picking where and how to contribute to my community. I chose to do a clean-up at a local park so that the park will be more inviting and people can use it knowing that the park is taken care of and not run-down. This project impacted my learning by giving me the opportunity to identify where in the community there is a need and how I can go about contributing to the solution.
One more example of a leadership opportunity obtained through the MPH program would be my capstone project. With this project, I am doing a PhotoVoice project with those that participate in programs given by the location of my Applied Practice Experience. This project has not gone entirely the way I had originally imagined, so it gave me an opportunity to learn how to regroup and change the project in a way that it will still reach the final goal.
