Module 8 Archive
For this activity, we were given a list of ethnic and racial groups, as well as a list of stereotype adjectives. We were to pick the adjectives that best described each group and then discuss our results in comparison to a survey of other’s results. I really learned a lot about my own biases which personally is an area that I need to work on. It’s easier to refute stereotypes than in the past because of the presence of many strong role models of varying races and ethnicities. It’s also easier for me to look past stereotypes as I get older because I am more apt to look at people as unique individuals as well as part of a whole. Regardless, stereotypes still exist, and it is important that we refute them when necessary.

I chose this word cloud with adjectives describing women because sometimes stereotypes can be positive.

Are people who help happier?
For this activity, we identified a list of individuals we know well and stated whether they were happy or unhappy, and selfish or unselfish. I suspected that people who help are happier, and this activity confirmed that for me. I know that I personally am happier when I can help others, which is why I am getting into this profession. I’m looking for a more fulfilling career, and I learned from this activity that I am headed in the right direction.

The Self across Situations
In this activity, we identified 5 traits we possess, and then log our behavior in different situations throughout the week. I learned a lot about myself from this activity, but my main takeaway was that personality traits affect behavior. If I possessed different personality traits than the ones I have, my behavior in any of these situations and their outcomes would be vastly different.

Aggression Questionnaire
In this activity we were given several different scenarios and were asked which ones were aggressive and discuss the results. I learned that there are many ways to display aggression. I also realized than seemingly nonaggressive acts still may contain elements of aggression. There are also levels to aggression. Certainly, an overtly malicious act comes across as more aggressive and a natural occurrence in nature. This activity also made me think about the connection between aggression and motive and the line between aggression being condemned or accepted.
For this visual artifact I chose a photo of brain activity during aggression, because regardless of the intent of aggression, the brain still activates in certain areas. It is only our perceptions that make something aggressive or non-aggressive or makes the aggression acceptable or not
acceptable.

Norm Violation Exercise
In this activity, we chose a social norm to violate on purpose and reflect on our experience with that. In doing this, I learned that the worst thing that can happen from violating social norms is that the person straying from the norm feels a little weird. There is no real harm in violating norms, it only matters if you care what people think of you. There are certain situations where it would probably be uncomfortable to go against the grain, but you only live once. This activity was my personal favorite, because it was fun, and it made me look at my life in a more light-hearted way. I often feel restrained because I worry what others will think, and I miss opportunities to be my authentic self. This activity made me want to take more chances and being silly and doing the unexpected.
