One social science theory that relates to the sample data breach letter is the general deterrence theory. This theory investigates why some people engage in deviant or criminal behaviors. It relates to the letter because it could provide some reasoning or insight into the minds of the intruder(s) for committing the data breach; the obvious reason being to obtain credit/debit card information in order to gain money. Another social science theory is the elaboration likelihood model, which examines how people change their attitudes about an object, event, or behavior which can affect their ways of life. In the case of the letter, the customers that received it may change their once positive attitude regarding the company to a more negative attitude because of the data breach. On the other hand, an economic theory that relates to the sample letter is the rational choice theory which determines that individuals make choices in their best interest. This theory can be linked to the letter because the company most likely thought it was not in their best interest to invest more funds into cybersecurity technology which resulted in them experiencing a data breach. The second economic theory is the keynesian economic theory. This theory calls for government investments and low taxes to stimulate the economy; the company sending the letter may have been more encouraged to invest and develop more effective cybersecurity measures if they had received some tax incentive from the government.
