Review what the author says and write a paragraph describing the five most serious violations and why you think those offenses are serious.
After reading the article, I’d say the fifth most serious offense on the list is sharing passwords, addresses, and photos of others online without their consent. Posting someone’s address online without consent could cause them to be targeted by a criminal which could lead to repercussions for the person that made the post, as it is illegal. The fourth most serious violation, in my opinion, is recording a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) call without consent. This is a serious offense because private conversations aren’t meant to be made public, and the person being recorded might say something that could have a negative impact on how the people, communities, and organizations in their life view that person. The third most serious offense from this list is cyberbullying and online trolling, as these actions are very harmful towards victims’ mental health, self-esteem, and can even lead to self-harm or suicide in serious cases. Next, the second most serious violation is faking your identity online. Actions such as catfishing or identity theft are when a person lies about their actual identity. Catfishing can affect the mental state of victims after finding out they had been lied to; they may feel used or begin to mistrust others in their lives. Identity theft involves stealing someone’s identity in order to make funds or commit illegal acts in their name, so the consequences of such acts would fall on the victim, rather than the offender. Finally, I’d say the most serious crime on this list is gathering information about children through surveys, etc. The article mentions that this violates the children’s online protection act if the child is under 13, and many kids that don’t understand proper cyber hygiene have access to the internet nowadays. These children don’t know that they should not be giving certain information to the digital realm, and if they give away information to a shady website or person online, it could result in serious consequences for that child or their family.
