SCADA Systems Concepts
Supervisory control and data acquisition. They control the process of water treatment, wastewater treatment, gas pipelines, they are used by humans and will process the data and show the operators. The way the data is read is called Remote Terminal Unit. This was connected to the sensor that sends the data out to the operator/human. We also have a programmable logic controller, they are hard to update, it gets updated maybe 2 times a month depending on the company. The operator can make decisions and or override the device and change the control on the device. The hard point in the device is the input and output of the system
Human Machine Interface
Human Machine gives the data to the human operator. Also, it runs data checks to make sure the machine or sensor is doing their job correctly and make sure everything in the machine/system is working at it’s top performance. When the information is being shown is shown in a graph way such as mini diagrams showing off the performance of the machine
Communication Methods and Infrastructure
Communication Methods and Infrastructure. Having the ability to communicate still needs certain requirements to make this happen such as being able to have the internet and have a Ip. the function of SCADA being monitored is called telemetry. The system SCADA is made to be able to backup data if anything goes wrong and makes sure that it is safe. And can be fixed without any problems during the down time.
Security vulnerabilities
Weak physical protection, weak devices with limited power, some devices might be antique, remote devices are hard to upgrade, weak passwords, all traffic is on just one, few firewalls.
In conclusion these SCADA system parts were made and ready to take on problems. Being designed to withstand certain situations and problems happening. Having this system is a need for your company’s safety and protection from online threats and hackers.
