- Describe your current methods of study. How do you study for each class? For most of my classes I review my notes and reread the readings assigned by the professor.
- What specific techniques do you use in class? Some techniques I use in class are color coding and categorizing my notes while always asking questions if I don’t understand something.
- What specific techniques do you use outside of class? A few techniques I use outside of class is that I will reread the material and review the notes that I took.
2. Identify one class in which you are doing well (not HLTH 101). What study methods work best and why? Sociology, my study method for this class is reading the chapter then taking a practice quiz to review the concepts. This method works for me because I better retain the key terms and information.
3. Identify one class where you are experiencing challenges and address the following questions? History
Planning:
- What strategies will I use to study? I will try to find a study partner and review the material more often.
- How much time do I plan on studying? Over what period of time and for how long each time I sit down do I need to study? I plan on studying 10.5 hours a week and I will study 1.5 hours a day every time I sit down.
- Which aspects of the course material should I spend more or less time on, based on my current understanding? I should spend more time studying the American Revolution and less time on slavery.
Monitoring:
- To what extent am I being systematic in my studying of all the material for the exam? I try review one topic from each chapter a day.
- To what extent am I taking advantage of all the learning supports available to me? I believe I am utilizing my learning supports quite well. Last week, I used the writing center as a resource to help me with my history research outline.
- Am I struggling with my motivation to study? If so, do I remember why I am taking this course? Yes, I really struggle to study because I have a hard time focusing and I procrastinate but I always remember I need it in order to get accepted into the nursing program
- Which of my confusions have I clarified? How was I able to get them clarified? I was confused on the Lincoln 10 percent plan and I was able to get them clarified by listening to my professor go in depth during class.
- Which confusions remain and how am I going to get them clarified? I am still confused on the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and I plan to get it clarified by rereading the textbook.
Evaluating:
- What about my exam preparation worked well that I should remember to do next time? I went over the exam review given by my professor before taking the exam.
- What did not work so well that I should not do next time or that I should change? I should change the time I completed my exam because I procrastinated and waited to the last minute to start.
- What questions did I not answer correctly? How did my answer compare with the suggested correct answer? What confusions do I have that I still need to clarify? We have not received our exam grades yet so I’m not sure which of my answers were incorrect.

One technique I am going to try in class is the “Visual Learner” note taking technique because it can help better memorize the information and help picture the material.

5. What is one new technique you could try outside of class to help you better understand the material? One new technique I will try to help me better understand the material is to recite the questions aloud and answer them without looking in the textbook.
