Mid-Semester Reflection
By: Kennedy Jones
- Study Habits
Every week I try to take ample time to study. I spend about 3 hours a week per class studying. I feel I could put in some extra hours when studying history. My preferred place to study is the library because it is quiet with little to no distractions. I usually go to the library at least 3 times a week and maybe even reserve a study room with my friends. Although, I do not have a specific study time I feel like I am most focused in the afternoon.
- Learning Style
I feel that I am an Auditory and Visual learner. I have also come to realize that I have multiple study habits. For example, classes like sociology and English if I read the textbook, I will usually retain the information. In history, I have to read the textbook and review the class lectures. But, in chemistry I have to do practice problems and watch others do practice problems as well. A new technique I started trying this year was color coding my notes then later rewriting them as a review.
- Transition to College
I feel that college has been somewhat of what I expected. I personally never thought I would be attending college during a pandemic and that is something I was not expecting. Something I found to be quite surprising is the amount of freedom students are given at ODU. As far as moving away from home, the only thing I have really struggled with a is maintaining a healthy sleep schedule and continuing to diet. I hope to soon find a routine that best fits me and will improve my academics. Although, I am still working on that, I found it significantly easy to budget my money.
- Connecting to Campus
In my opinion, I think I have done an okay job adjusting to college. I try to help out others when I can, and I ask for help when I need it. For example, I was having a difficult time trying to write my research outline for history. Instead of getting frustrated and upset I made an appointment with the writing center and was able to get the help and tips I needed. I also study with my suitemate from time to time and we share the information we have learned. This gives us both an opportunity to learn something new and evaluate what all we know. With me still adjusting to college, I have been too busy to attend any interest meetings, but I wish to do so soon.
