This weeks discussion topic is to discuss and describe four ethical issues that arise when storing electronic information about individuals. These four major issues are privacy and confidentiality, security breaches, system implementation, and data inaccuracies. Privacy and confidentiality are used by places such healthcare and insurance companies and the key to providing people privacy and to have confidentiality is to only allow authorized individuals to access the information of their users, But although controlling access to the information is important it is not always sufficient for protecting information and its confidentiality. Secondly, security breaches threaten the privacy of patients when their information is made available to other people without their knowledge or consent. Moving onto the third major issue which is system implementation . This issue can negatively impact the quality or care of a patients safety and also cause financial losses. Many of these EHR implementations fail because people underestimate the importance of one of more clinicians to serve as opinion leaders for providers. Lastly, is data inaccuracies. Concerns have been raised about the accuracy and reliability of data entered electronically. Things such as “cut and paste” is a big issue and it increases the risk for liability. Loss and destruction of data can also happen during data transfers and this problems tends to raise concerns about the accuracy of the data. Overall these are all big ethical issues within the electronic world and we need to work towards fixing them for all patients and users across the world.
