How do cybersecurity risks in the U.S. compare to those in other countries? I want to specifically focus on how they compare to cybersecurity risks in China. While the U.S is above average when it comes to cybersecurity and technology we are not the best nation. We rank fifth among 60 nations when comparing cybersecurity measures through numerous factors. China ranks #1 in this list. While china ranks number one it is also the biggest cybersecurity threat because it is home to thousands if not millions of hackers. According to a study done in 2017 the United States lost 66.3 billion dollars due to cyberattacks from china. Both the United States and china have upgraded their cyber systems over the past few years as the cyberworld continues to grow bigger and bigger. Although our government continues to work to make our cybersecurity stronger and more resilient many Americans fear that they have lost control over their personal information such as medical and financial records. This fear comes mainly from the fact that a majority of Americans have experiences Identity theft or fraud. These same things also happen with Chinas cybersecurity and because of this their legislative body has created multiple laws to help deal with cybercrime. One of the biggest laws was the ” Cyber Security Law” in 2017 which defined the concept of cyberspace sovereignty. The most recent law they have released was the “personal information protection law” which became effective in November of 2021 and this law focuses on regulating and promoting the protection of personal information. Overall both countries have big issues and flaws within their cybersecurity systems, but I do personally believe that china is handling their issue better and faster than we are as Americans.
