Education: Delsi has a Master’s degree in teaching and a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
What inspired him/her to get into that field
Working at CHKD for 15 years inspired Delsi to become a nurse, she fell in love with the idea of aiding others.
What was his/her path to his/her current job
After Nursing School, Delsi’s path was to pass the NCLEX, Start out at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center to specialize in obstetrician (OB), work in a nursery for 1 year to obtain experience, then gain experience in Med-Surg, gain experience in home health, gain experience in IMCU, last transfer to CDU.
Basic roles and responsibilities
According to Delsi, nurses are responsible for assessments, taking care of patients, making sure patients get their scheduled medication on time, monitor and report any changes to patient health, and operate medical equipment.
His/her favorite (or most rewarding) aspect about the job
Delsi’s favorite aspect about this job is helping people
What is the most surprising aspect of their career His/her
When Delsi first started nursing, the amount of responsibility surprised her the most. Delsi stated that “as a nurse everything falls on you, nurses are expected to know everything and to do everything. Nursing changes quickly, and it’s important to think ahead, especially the “what ifs”. Most importantly, always have a plan”
What is the most challenging aspect of their career
According to Delsi, the most challenging aspect of being an RN is being able to deal with the changes and to grow as a nurse. Delsi stated that ever since COVID-19 hit it changed the game for nursing, “it was hard seeing people die everyday from this disease.
Advice he/she would give to someone getting into the health field
Delsi advised that anyone who is looking forward to having a specialty in nursing should always go through med-surg before doing the specialty. Med-surg is the basics of nursing and it is very essential for nurses to have that experience. She also stated that everything that you learned in Nursing school will apply in Med-Surg. She also advised to work nights because nights is way more calmer than day shift
