Food security is an ongoing issue in the United States influenced by policy changes, challenges, and advocacy efforts. section of my capstone project explores key issues in food security, emphasizing the Farm Bill, changes in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, gaps in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, and the critical role of child nutrition programs.
The Impact of the Farm Bill
The Farm Bill is the largest piece of federal legislation impacting both food and farming, significantly impacting those facing food insecurity. As grocery prices continue to rise and supply chain disruptions continue, collaborative efforts to support food banks and their communities is need.
Changes in SNAP Benefits and the WIC Program
The end of the temporary increase in SNAP benefits in February 2023 has had significant consequences for individuals and families relying on these benefits. The need for advocacy to maintain and enhance SNAP benefits is crucial as these changes affect many people.
The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, which supports pregnant women, postpartum women and their children, is facing a potential $1 billion loss. If Congress doesn’t increase funding, millions of eligible participants might lose access to essential nutrition assistance.
Child Nutrition Programs and Community Responses
Despite challenges, child nutrition programs like the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and other USDA initiatives continue to combat food insecurity. These programs not only provide nutritious meals to children but also help combat the effects of food insecurity, benefiting overall outcomes for America’s youth.
In Chesapeake specifically, community organizations are tackling food insecurity with dedication and innovation. The Virginia Peninsula Food Bank actively distributes food, creates partnerships, and addresses the root causes of hunger. The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia plays a significant role in ensuring individuals and families have access to nutritious food, adapting to the community’s changing needs.
Meals on Wheels of Chesapeake focuses on delivering meals to vulnerable populations, particularly seniors, providing not only nutrition but also a sense of care and well-being. Additionally, Buffalow Family & Friends is making a difference through community initiatives and support programs, ensuring a holistic response to food insecurity.
