ESPA 3191 Spanish Grammar

Linguistics, as a humanities science, dissects a language to understand its function and its expression through its different elements. The goal of this course was to study phrases and its various components so as to understand how Spanish constructs and communicates thoughts and abstracts ideas. Essential linguistics concepts were discussed in class first, then practical exercises were conducted to apply the concepts. Some of the topics discussed were focused on Phonetics, Morphosyntax, and Semantics of the Spanish language. Below are some sample exercises conducted in class. This course played an important role in my education in Puerto Rico because it helped me understand my culture and heritage better than before.

This was a handout given in class to conceptually understand that Phonetics, Morphosyntax, and Semantics are the three different ways a language can be studied.

Spanish is an expansive language as it can create new words by taking a lexical morpheme (root of the word) and adding affixes ( 3 subcategories) that contain different degrees of information. For example,  flexive suffixes give grammatical information; derivative suffixes create new words and grammatical categories; diminutive and augmentative suffixes express size of the lexical morpheme; and pejorative suffixes add negative meaning.

The sample below shows two of the three methods to describe the relationships with which the parts of a linguistic structure is joined. One method analyzes the linguistic components by encompassing the lexical structure in a square with small compartments, and the other method employs an arboreal diagram where the lexical structure is divided into smaller and smaller pieces so as to understand the function of each component.
