On most of my papers I write I feel as if i’m doing a good job, but when I get my scores back it always ends up being little things iv’e missed. In my first essay I had trouble with mostly commas, fragments, and run-ons. Iv’e always had trouble with using commas, because I thought you were just supposed to use then when you take a breath during your sentence. But now I know that is not the only time you have to use them. I’m still getting used to using them with FANBOYS which is ‘for, and, nor, but, or yet, and so’. I also tend to use commas when I think the sentence is getting to long and I need a break. I’m still trying to figure out how to stop doing that, but it’s a bit challenging. This brings me to my next point which are fragments. I usually think some sentences are supposed to be by themselves, when they aren’t and then they don’t make any sense. In essay 1 I had a lot of fragments because I would start my sentences off with ‘then’ or ‘rather’. I now know that you are typically not supposed to start a sentence off like that, because then it turns out to be a dependent clause. Like I said before I usually do break my sentences because I feel as if they are getting to be too long. Which brings me to my last point I also have trouble with run-on sentences. I’ve had trouble with run-ons since I’ve started writing papers, because when I say something in my head I feel as if it should be a complete sentence on my paper. Now I know that if a sentence seems like it can be two then I need to split them up even if it is a small sentence like “I really love ice cream”. It still is a little confusing to me because I feel that a sentence should have a lot of words in it, for it to be complete. Other than having troubles with commas, fragments, and run-ons I feel as if i’m doing okay with my papers.
