Here at Old Dominion University, there are over a hundred plus of degrees, programs, and majors you can commit to. The major I’m committed to is cybersecurity and there are a few other majors here at ODU that heavily relates to it such as criminal justice, computer science, mathematics and statistics, and information systems and technology. Something all five of these majors have in common including cybersecurity is that they all fall under the bachelor of science which includes taking a lot of science and intensive math courses during your four years. To give background on all four starting with criminal justice, when pursuing to get a degree in criminal justice it will allow students to learn and study various topics relating to the many aspects of the criminal justice system. They will learn about law enforcement, the American court system, criminal behavior, and psychological factors. Criminal justice and cybersecurity relate because the things cyber technicians are confronted with are part of crimes that they have to learn and manage. Next is computer science which is a field that combines mathematics, engineering, and science all into one major for students to explore how to develop computers, network, and build software. Computer science and cybersecurity relate extremely while they both deal with technology and computers one is for making the computers while the other is for protecting them. To continue with the next major which is mathematics and statistics that is all about problem-solving students will take a variety of math courses and learn how to apply what they learn on a deeper level of problem-solving in the real world. When it comes to the relationship between mathematics and cybersecurity, math plays a crucial role in cybersecurity helping professionals learn how to design and analyze systems. Lastly, the final major information systems and technology that is designed to provide students with the technical background in information technology along with the perspective of the business environment and how information technology plays a big role. The way information technology and cybersecurity relate is that IT deals with the use of computers and networks while cybersecurity focuses on keeping those systems safe from attackers.
