What role do engineers have in managing cyber risks?
It is important for engineers to manage cyber security because of the risk that hackers can cause. One thing that can help engineers with communicating with others is cryptology. Cryptology is the bases of creating code and breaking code. Cryptology is broken into two categories. The first is cryptography and the other is cryptanalyses. Cryptography is used to make code and cryptanalyses is when code is being broken. How this applies to communicating in a safe way is by communicating using cyphertext. Cyphertext is basically a message that is encrypted. How this works is that one party can send the other party a message which has to be a planned message to keep things safe as possible. When the message is sent to the other party it is encrypted using an algorithm. After the encrypted text is sent and reaches its destination the message is decrypted with a key by the second party that received the message. Which basically means that the message is put back to gather with the algorithm. How this is safe is that if a hacker infiltrated the message he/she would need a key to decrypted the message so it would almost be impossible. There are different types of crypto systems. They are mainly different because of how complicated they are. Plus, some of the system can be really costly depending on how complex and how big the encryption is. There are pros and cons to key cryptography. One pro is that it is very powerful to use. One con is that it can be really costly. Plus, it is not good to have a lot of information to be sent to the other party do to the secure reasons. So overall a way engineers can manage cyber risks is by using encryption keys to keep their information safe.
