This semester I am most excited about learning the campus, meeting my professors, participating in school events, and attending all the games. I am also looking forward to making lifelong friends. My biggest challenge this semester will be time management. I am very busy, and I am learning to make time for schoolwork, homework, studying, and going to my health profession meetings. I am learning how to juggle such a chaotic schedule. This semester I don’t have any time commitments because I want to focus on my studies, getting great grades, and just adjusting to my new lifestyle. I am looking forward to starting back working next semester. In high school I participated in many sports. I have played basketball, volleyball, softball, and run track. This semester I do not plan on joining any clubs. I want all my attention to be on school because I want to make sure I start off on the right foot.
My major is nursing, and I chose this major because I feel as if there are not enough people in the medical field that have a passion for it; they are just there for a paycheck. The skills I possess for this career are patience, understanding, communication skills, and attention to detail. That is why I feel I am best suited for this major. Some experience I have is taking care of patients. At a young age I helped with my great grandmother and grandfather. Giving them their shots, medication, taking them their food, making sure they had enough covers, and I made sure they were comfortable. I am also certified in giving CPR. My career goal in the next 5 to 10 years will be graduating college and getting accepted into a top nursing program. From there I hope to further my education and become a nurse practitioner.
The biggest difference between high school and college is now I live on my own, so my mother is not here to tell me what I need to do and when I need to do it. Also, classes are not every day. I have time to do my work and thoroughly go over it. There is a big difference between doing homework and studying. Homework is mainly material you went over in class, so you memorized it. Studying is sitting down writing down notes and getting an understanding of what you went over. Studying is when you really learn the material and not you just memorize it. I have a chemistry class and lab. I plan to study at least two hours since math is a weak spot for me. I have an English literature class and it is an easy class, so an hour of studying is good for me. Next, I have a sociology class and I will study that material for an hour and a half because there is a lot of reading involved. My last class is my health profession class, and I can spend an hour on studying more if I don’t understand any of the assignments. I plan to study in my room most of the time. Potential distractions I could have is my cell phone, but I can easily fix that by putting my phone on silent and leaving it on my bed while I work at my desk. The best study time is in the afternoon right after my last class. I am still awake and in a productive mood. The best study techniques for me are reading notes highlighting the important information and watching videos so I can see how to do my assignments.
