Maslow’s theory states that our actions are motivated by certain physiological needs. It is often represented by a pyramid of needs, with the most basic needs at the bottom and more complex needs at the top. It was first introduced as a paper titled “A Theory of Human Motivation”. The hierarchy suggest that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to another. There are five levels of Maslow’s hierarchy. The first level is physiological needs. Physiological needs are ones that are vital for survival, for example food, water, breathing and homeostasis. A good example of this technological wise is this app Cava where I order food on to pick up. The second level is security and safety needs, which can include financial security, health and wellness and safety against accidents and injury. A good example of this is the Ring app which lets you know who is at your front door. The third level is social needs which can include friendships, romantic attachments, family, social groups community groups, churches and religious organizations. A good example for social needs is the dating app Tinder. The fourth level is esteem needs, which is the need for appreciation and respect. Esteem needs play an important role in motivating behavior. A Technological example for esteem needs is Instagram. The fifth and final level is self-actualization needs. These needs are involved with people who are self aware and are concerned with personal growth and less concerned with the opinions of other people and are interested in fulfilling their potential. A good example of self-actualization with technology is an app called Lumosity. It consist of games that help improve your memory, attention, flexibility, speed of processing and problem solving.
