Growing up, not everyone in my family shared the dream of going to college and pursuing a field in academic studies. Truth be told, I was one of them. Being a child is one of the best things one could be blessed with because the thought of what your plans for the future would be never crosses your mind. The word responsibility is also unknown to you at that point of your life. As I went through the transition from childhood to adulthood, I became more aware of how important responsibility is. A big part of that realization and the thrive to achieve greatness was what led to my decision to attend college.

Technology has been on the rise lately. Technology from a couple years back can’t be categorized in the same rank or group with technology now. Being classified as one of the newer generation and with the continuous rise of technology, I thought to myself, why not engage in a field which relates to the development of technology to get a much better understanding  as we gradually transition from the world we live in to a much more technology related environment. This is one of the main reasons which led to my  decision of being a Cyber security major at Old Dominion University.

Before making the decision to become a cybersecurity major at ODU, I  came across several similar majors including computer science, Information systems and technology, computer engineering, data science, etc. However, cybersecurity is considered the most demanding in terms of job opportunities. Each one of them listed above has its own way of connection and relation to cybersecurity starting from computer science which has to do with the study of computers and programming. It involves essential skills needed in the field of cybersecurity. Computer engineering involves the study of electronic engineering which results in the building and development of hardware and software systems that fall under or are considered relevant in the field of cybersecurity. Data science involves the study of data which could be used in the business aspects. It also involves the managing of data analysis and statistics which work by predicting the potential risk of system and cyber threats in general. Lastly, Information systems and technology. Information systems and technology has a broader viewpoint to cybersecurity mainly because it focuses on the management of computer related networks and systems to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in an organization.
