Assignment Takeaway 4
Love is a powerful emotion. It can make us act in ways we never thought of. It can change us to be better or worse. There are several types of love: ludus love, mania love, pragma love, eros love, storge love, and agape love. Love can also be mysterious, like what is shown in the image. It is uncertain what type of love there is between the two, but by holding hands, we assume there is love.
In this assignment, I answered the Styles of Love Questionnaire. In the questionnaire, low scores equate to higher interest and vice versa. After comparing my scores, it showed that I scored low for storge love and agape love. My highest score was ludus love. This meant that I had a desire for love that was built from a friendship and deep care for the lover. It also showed that my interest in love formed from treating the relationship as a game is low. While looking at my scores, I noticed mania love was the third lowest love. I didn’t agree this was the case, but it helped me reflect on my desires for love.
After reflecting on the assignment, I thought about my past relationship. I felt that it affected my results as well since we had been friends before we decided to become more. This assignment helped me think more about love and its dimensions.
Assignment Takeaway 3

Racism has been a hot topic for a long time. It dates back to as far as colonial times. A person disliking another solely because of skin color. This hate has created words that are frowned upon when used. While I believe this type of language is harmful, I also believe that these words can be used unintentionally.
In this assignment, I challenged the reasoning behind Michael Richards’s tirade. While what he said was awful, I believed this did not come from a place of hate. Instead, he was furious at someone who was interrupting his act. He couldn’t go anywhere to calm down, so he said the nastiest thing he could think of to make the audience member as mad as he was. He later appeared on television to explain his actions and to apologize. While making his appearance, he showed signs that it bothered him deeply. This doesn’t come from someone who hates. This comes from someone who realized what they did was wrong and to become a better person. This shows that while these words can be used for hate, they can arise from anger as well.
This assignment reminded me of our study on heuristics. When we meet someone for the first time, the person may not be in the best mood and take it out on us. We may assume that they are a nasty person. The assignment reminded me that these assumptions can be dangerous, not just for ourselves but to others as well.
Assignment Takeaway 2

When we meet someone for the first time, we start to make our own impressions about them from what they wear and how they act before we get to know about the person. It is important for us to think about our self-presentation before the first impression. In the picture, I am graduating from high school. It shows that with enough determination and effort, I am able to reach my goals.
With this assignment, I was able to look back on pictures about myself and see what others would think about when looking at these photos. They show me the differences about myself and what shaped me into what I am. My family is one of the most important set of people I think about and take care of. The photos also show my strive to succeed in my classes and to become a counselor. For example, in a picture of me dressed as Bootstrap Bill, I am able to see the artistic side of myself. Each of the pictures are able to paint a vivid idea about the type of person I am, the person I changed into, and the ideas I hold true. While these are always changing, each part of them show a side of me that I keep with me.
Assignment Takeaway 1

With media being so prevalent, we tend to take it at face value. While learning about heuristics, I seen that availability heuristics aligned with the news covering the same information so often, even if it isn’t true. We are always told that crime is at an all time high, even though it has stayed at a steady pace compared to past years. What I was able to take away most from assignment 1 is that we should not always take information at face value. We should go deeper and explore to see if that information is true.
In assignment 1, we go over the four types of heuristics. Heuristics are quick responses we have when approached with something we have little information about. Status quo heuristics appear when questioned between old beliefs and new ideas. Representativeness heuristics are used to compare someone to other groups that have similar traits. Availability heuristics are based around memories of the same instances. An anchoring and adjustment heuristic is used when making a starting point and then improved upon. While going over these heuristics, I was able to learn how these influence us. Even though these heuristics can be helpful shortcuts, they can also lead to incorrect assumptions. For example, when meeting a person for the first time, we can assume what they work as before they tell us. If a person has pictures of cars in the house, some would assume that he is a mechanic. This can be wrong and he may actually be working as a librarian instead. It is important to challenge these heuristics to make sure misinformation isn’t spread.
