How do you study for each class?
For all of my asynchronous classes such as, chemistry and english, I like to write my notes for the week and add sticky notes for important information I need to remember. That way when I look back in my notes I can quickly see the important tidbits of information. For sociology, I reread the chapter and do practice quizzes in Connect to study. For algebra, I do review problems in aleks so I am prepared for the test.
What specific techniques do you use in class?
For asynchronous since I don’t have a set class time I use the same techniques for all work for those classes. In sociology, I like to record the lecture for later reference and take notes in a notebook while in zoom. For algebra I print out the notes prior to class and fill in the examples and blanks during class. I even like to take little side notes in the margin.
What specific techniques do you use outside of class?
Identify one class in which you are doing well in. What study methods work best and why?
I am doing well in sociology class right now. My study methods for this class are recording the lecture and listening to it later, taking notes on the printed powerpoint, taking notes while reading, and taking practice quizzes on Connect. Recording the lecture for future reference works best because I can hear key points made in class that I may have missed and I can write them down later. Professor Lopez also explains a lot of things in more detail during lecture so it helps to listen back to it if I do not understand something. Printing the powerpoint helps a lot also because I can write the things he says about the information on the slide to look back on. Taking notes while reading helps me summarize and comprehend the chapter I just read. Last but not least, taking practice quizzes on Connect helps to test my understanding of the chapter and lets me know what I should study more.
- Identify one class where you are experiencing challenges and address the following questions.
I am experiencing challenges in my asynchronous chemistry class with time management and including the right amount of time for the class in my schedule. I am in the process of joining a chemistry study group and I will start going to office hours as many times a week I can. I plan on studying for 3-6 hours a week. Every other day starting on Tuesday I will sit down for at least 2 hours and study the chemistry notes for each chapter. I should spend less time on topics that I only need a refresher on and focus more on the topics I have never learned. I would say I am pretty good at sticking to a plan while studying but I could still use some work in that area. I am trying to take advantage of all of the learning supports available to me. Right now, I have set up a study group and I will be attending her office hours more frequently. I may also look into getting a chemistry tutor. I do not struggle with my motivation to study. When it is time to study for any test or exam I take it very seriously and I take my time. I was confused and stressed about not knowing how to study for the class or set time aside for it. So I emailed my professor about starting a study group and she sent a list of names who were interested. Now, I can talk to other students in the same boat as me and we can work together on studying and time management. As of right now, I am not confused about anything else but I am sure a question will come up eventually. When that time comes I will email the professor or discuss my problems in the study group. Doing the study guide in preparation for the exam was very helpful and having a printed out periodic table. I’ll definitely be doing that again. Not bringing my calculator did not work at all. I need to remember to bring it next time or just leave it in my bag so I’ll never forget it again. I do not know specifically what questions I got wrong, but I have a feeling I answered the questions about ionization and valence electrons wrong. After the exam I looked over my notes for those topics and I now see where I went wrong.
