The Organization
I chose the organization Meals on Wheels Virginia Beach. Volunteers can deliver hot healthy meals to the seniors in the area. As well as having a connection with the seniors and making their days. While delivering food volunteers make sure the seniors are doing okay. Meals on Wheels wants to keep the local elderly or handicapped safe, keep them out of nursing homes, and keep their sense of self. If volunteers do not want to deliver food they can help fundraise, help with administrative activities and public speaking events.
About Meals on Wheels Virginia Beach
Their mission is to not only deliver meals to the elderly or handicapped but to also keep them out of long term care facilities and to help them feel like they aren’t alone. Besides delivering meals, they provide assistance and safety checks for the clients. If needed volunteers will call 911 for the clients and stay with them until first responders arrive. They help the seniors in need who may not be able to see their families or go to get food for themselves. This organization is important to the community because they care for the local elders and handicapped. It also keeps their family members at ease knowing there is someone who can help their loved ones when they can not. My Reflection
My values, opinions, and beliefs about the importance of health have not changed. I have already been a strong believer in health being one of the most important things in a person’s life. From my personal experiences from volunteering to my family members experiencing health issues. I have seen how important making sure you are well can be. Therefore, I understand how vital a persons’ health is and it should be a priority.
These services relate to my future career field because it is health related. All healthcare jobs link together and it starts with making sure the community is healthy. This organization does that. Other degree programs this could relate to would be: Public Health and Nursing. Considering that there are nurses that take care of the elderly or handicapped in their home. Public health workers work to improve the quality of living and healthcare in the community. I personally would not choose either of these as a parallel major because I am not interested in having patients to take care of. I would rather be behind the scenes and in a lab setting.
