Pre-Semester Reflection

My intended major is Health Science with a concentration in cytotechnology. I chose this major because I am very interested in medical research and working in a lab. Skills that I possess that make this major/career a good choice for me would be my ability to work in a team and be a leader if needed.  I have no experience that relates to my major/career. I would prefer to work in a lab setting. My career goals in 5 years will be working in a hospital lab as a cytotechnician. My career goals in 10 years will be working in a lab researching. I would like to learn more about Nuclear Medicine Technology, cytotechnology, and biology.

I expect the biggest difference between high school and college to be the amount of work. I expect my biggest challenge to be time management this semester. I expect my biggest challenge with moving away to be getting home sick. I do not have a job. I do not plan on getting a job.

es, there is a difference between studying and homework. Homework is work that you have to do to turn in after finishing the assignments you are done. Studying is anytime and its reviewing everything you have learned non-stop. I plan on studying 1-2 hours studying for each class every week. I expect to spend the most time studying for chemistry. I expect to spend the least amount of time studying for English. I plan to study in the library. Potential distractions I can anticipate are other people talking and my phone. I plan to avoid these distractions by going to a study room and turning my phone off. My best time to study would be 1:00pm because that is usually after lunch and when I am most awake. I plan to manage all of my assignments by using my planner, keeping my schedule up to date, and focusing on time management. I plan on balancing all of my various commitments by setting aside time for each and planning each day.

I think rewriting notes, drawing pictures, and using different colors in notes work best for me when studying. Yes, I do use different study techniques for different classes. For example, I draw pictures for most of my chemistry notes and I use more highlighting and annotating for English.

The Student Success Center is an academic resource at ODU I can use to help me earn As this semester. The Student Rec Center is a non-academic resource at ODU, it can help me by getting me out of my room and exercising. I think I will use the Writing Center this semester. I would like to learn more about what the library has to offer because I will be doing a big research assignment this semester. In high school, I participated in cheerleading all 4 years, SCA my senior year, BETA, Mu Alpha Theta, and nurse aide. I plan to join a curly hair club. I expect to gain new friends and hair tips from this experience.
