End of the Semester Reflection

Study habits

At the beginning of the semester I had a lot of motivation and was not connected to campus, so I spent almost all my free time doing something school related. Now that I have found my group of friends on campus, as well as joined a sorority, I spend less time on alone in my room studying and more time hanging out with my friends and sisters than I was earlier in the semester. I still put in a lot of work towards studying but instead of just studying alone, now I also study in a friend’s room or at the Webb with friends. In the beginning of the semester I was still a little intimidated by parts of campus, so I mostly stayed in my room or tagged along with my roommate, but I realized through out the semester I work best alone in an environment that is not my dorm room. I found that one of my favorite places to go to get a lot of work done is the desk semi-hidden in the back corner of the library on the third floor. I went to the library to do homework and study for all of my classes, except english mostly. I like to work on assignment for my English class in my room, because they were basically all writing assignments and I can use voice text to help get a chunk of my essay done quicker and not disturb others around me. I also ended up working on my math homework while with my friends, because they are in a lower math than me and struggle, while I’ve always had math come easy to me, so I would tutor and help them in math.

Transition to collegeĀ

Going into college I expected to be friends with everyone and get along really well with the other people on the hall, along with not really talking or calling home much. I quickly learned that not everyone will like you and there is nothing you can do to make them accept you. I call my friends from home a lot and I greatly underestimated how much I would miss my dogs. I did not go home the entire semester, and I only saw my sister who lives in Newport News a handful of times and my mom came down to see me when I had my appendix removed. I came into the semester expecting not to go home till Thanksgiving due to COVID, but it was hard seeing others go home and not be able to see my best friend. I have found that Delta Zeta has been a good resource to hold me accountable for setting aside time to study with the five hours of individual and five proctored study hours we need to log each week. Personally I have not found the LLC very helpful this semester. I was nice having class at the same time as my roommate for holding each other accountable for going to class, but my room mate was the only real friend I had on the floor, so I didn’t reap all the benefits, like working on school work with my hall mates. This semester I learned a lot about myself and what I truly value in friendships, to sound cliche, but I left a friend group in high school that was held together purely on the fact we had been friends for so long and ran on the drama of the week, and I knew I did not want to deal with drama like that in college. I’m glad that I learned who my group of friends are and to not be afraid to branch out from who my roommate or suit mate are friends with, and that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I’m also glad I learned to go study by myself to be more productive, because that will be helpful for the rest of college.
