My Major

I recently changed my major to Recreation Therapy, because it will better prepare me for grad school when I go into the physical therapy program. I have wanted to do physical therapy since I had knee surgery my freshman year of high school, and went to physical therapy for the first time.

Parallel Plan

My parallel major is Recreational Therapy, and I recently switched my major from Exercise science. I chose recreational therapy, because in the event I have to push off going to a physical therapy graduate program for some reason I can still work in a similar field to what I originally planned to with physical therapy. An interesting fact about this major is that during the spring semester of your senior year in the program you do do a twelve credit class where you do internships for class. Recreational therapists work a lot in hospitals with patients who are recovering from huge accidents and very commonly traumatic brain injuries, as well as youth with disabilities helping them adjust and learn to function better in society. As a recreational therapist I’d be interested in working with veterans at the VA which is a huge employer of Rec. Therapists. For this major I’m taking the introduction to recreational therapy in the spring and taking care of some of my general education classes, before taking more classes in the major starting next fall. As part of the major requirements I will have to do internship opportunities, under the supervision of licensed Recreational Therapists, which will allow me to gain professional experiences in the field. My advisor for this major is Mr. Trey Mayo.
