Journal 10 – Social Cybersecurity

The article “Social Cybersecurity – An Emerging National Security Requirements” discusses cyber security that deals with social engineering. Information warfare is used to influence narratives and cause division in opposing nations. There is a massive change in how individuals receive information. Traditionally, most information came from the government or large news media outlets. Now, most information is consumed via social media and blogs. With this shift, quality control of information has declined. Social media does not rely on much fact-checking, and it is always the spread of fake news and misinformation. Platforms like this can further divide the citizens of opposing nations. Additionally, misinformation can quickly spread worldwide with the internet and social media. The article discusses how opposing states can maneuver information to effectively disrupt information flow via methods like Misdirection, Hashtag latching, smoke screening, and thread jacking (Which is used to disrupt a productive online conversation). Bots are another way information campaigns can spread faster without much human intervention.
