Robert Bierstadt stated, “The social sciences adhere to the same principles as the natural sciences.” Scientific principles can help us understand cyber security and human behavior. It can also help us understand societal changes and how they relate to the growth of technology. Taking the scientific principle of Relativism, which theorizes all things are related, we can see how technological changes have changed society. For example, we can study how advancements in technology have altered the way in which students in K-12 learn. Other scientific principles, such as Objectivity and Ethical Neutrality, can help us determine ethical concerns regarding cyber security, such as how much an organization can monitor its end users’ activity during the workday or how cyber criminals should be held accountable. Determinism can help us understand how past events led to the creation of new standards in cyber defense and data protection such as the creation of the GDPR in Europe, which was a reaction to privacy concerns amongst its citizens and a way to protect end-user information.
