Journal Entry 4 – Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow’s Hierarchy in relation to technology has related to my life in different ways at each level. I will start from the bottom and work my way up.

Psychological (Food, water, rest, warmth): At this level, I can point out that when relaxing, I enjoy being able to watch TV or play video games, though it is not a necessity for me to be able to relax. I have a 10-year-old son, however, who, given he has grown up around technology and the internet, finds it hard to rest at night without audible playing on his Alexa.

Safety (Security): Technology provides this need using my home monitoring system, the ability to call for help on my cell phone whenever there is an emergency, and the security that comes with always being connected.

Belongingness and love (Friends, Intimate relationships): Although I do not use social media, as I find it to be addicting and a waste of time, I do enjoy the fact I can text my friends to chat or talk to my wife while she is at work via text.

Esteem needs (prestige and accomplishment): As stated previously, I enjoy playing video games, specifically competitive online games like Rocket League or Pokémon Trading Card Game. I gain esteem through achieving higher ranks and playing in tournaments and championships. Also, completing my education asynchronously gives me a strong sense of accomplishment as I work towards my goals.

Self-Actualization (Reaching one’s full potential): Technology has assisted me at this level as I have worked a lot through counseling and support groups to better myself and work on my mental well-being, spiritual connection, and recovery.
