The internet is a vast place where anyone can talk to anybody and people connect from all over the world. There are many benefits as well as disadvantages to this feature of the internet. Cyber stalking as well as cyber harassment are a big issue in the world and society we live in today. To understand how big of an issue these crimes are we need to know what they actually are. Cyber stalking and harassment is when someone uses the internet to give unwanted attention to someone. This includes excessive amounts of comments, texting or direct messaging, as well as defamation. Because of how popular these crimes have become on the internet there are laws to better protect people from this abuse, but even when the abuser has been caught it is very easy for them to continue their harassment from another device. The internet has also made it very easy for a victim and their offender to connect even when in prison. In prison they get phone calls and even time on the internet so they could possibly still contact their victim while in jail. Again it is easier for them to stay so connected to their victims because a lot of people today use the internet for everything, so no matter how the offender contacts his victim it will be hard for them to ignore. I think that in the past it was harder for people to stalk and harass because they needed to physically follow or at least watch that person, but now they can harass from anywhere in the world. It is also harder to catch these types of offenders because of the internet which makes the victims distrust the criminal justice system as well as make them more scared of the offender. Another thing that I don’t think people think about is the information that they put out into the internet. A lot of information that people think is private really isn’t and so it is easy for an offender to learn information about their victim. I think the internet is allowing people to stalk and harass because of the easy access of computers and other technology.
