Consumer perceptions of personal cyber awareness, knowledge, and risk, Journal of Cybersecurity, Volume 11, Issue 1, tyaf029, https://doi.org/10.1093/cybsec/tyaf029

The authors of the research paper are attempting to find a correlation between how people’s cyber awareness and cyber knowledge can influence and individual being susceptible to cyber risk. This has been studied by surveying 263 participants with varying amounts of cyber knowledge to identify if the original assertion is true. Through the survey they conclude that the more cyber knowledge one has, the cyber risks can be minimized, however having cyber awareness is not enough to lead to real progress. Personal cyberspace is also given a spotlight in a model for understanding one’s actual risk.

Kuźnicka-Błaszkowska, D., Kostyuk, N. (2025). Emerging need to regulate deepfakes in international law: the Russo–Ukrainian war as an example, Journal of Cybersecurity, Volume 11, Issue 1, tyaf008, https://doi.org/10.1093/cybsec/tyaf008

The article uncovers the effect that using Deepfakes can have on society by spreading disinformation in an attempt for gain. These effects range from personal defamation to large scale conflicts such as the Russo-Ukrainian War. The article highlights how not only are the Deepfakes harmful, but they also do not have laws set in place that can accurately combat them. It then proposes a solution called cognitive liberty to combat the growing issues with Deepfakes.

Kirk, N.W. (2026). Vigilance towards AI voices can be nudged through a change in ‘MINDSET’, Journal of Cybersecurity, Volume 12, Issue 1, tyag001, https://doi.org/10.1093/cybsec/tyag001

The author does a study on whether people can recognize the difference between AI generated voices and actual human voices. The research finds that people can have a hard time discerning if the voice is real or not on a regular basis, especially if the voice has an “accent”. The real way that people made progress was that they were informed about the nuances of how the voices could operate versus just simply telling them that the call was a scam. It concludes that people are not good at distinguishing between the two and in fact are closer odds to guessing even though people were confident in their answers. These finding relay concern for the future since giving people helpful tools and tips did not significantly give people an edge in choosing the right answers.

*which goes counter to the other articles above.

The authors of the research paper are attempting to find a correlation between how people’s cyber awareness and cyber knowledge can influence and individual being susceptible to cyber risk.
