Assignment Takeaway 5

Language is a major factor that plays a role in how cultures communicate with one another both verbally and non-verbally and each have their own unique language that is used to relay beliefs and intentions. The example of language that was discussed is silence which is a type of non-verbal communication that is significant as it is perceived differently across cultures. A comparison of Japanese and North American cultures views of silence pointed out several distinct differences between them. It was interesting to learn that the Japanese value and cultivate silence in their culture, whereas North American cultures view is the opposite where silence is seen as the atmosphere being awkward or that there is a lack of interest between people. Chapter 9 “Culture and Emotion” relates to the assignment as Japanese view of silence is demonstrating a cultural display rules which regulates their social emotional expressions. They tend to de-amplify their emotions unless when self-asserting where body language and facial expressions are important cues to help with what is attempting to be expressed, though ambiguously presented.
This assignment was personally relevant to me as it allows me insight into how another culture views and uses language and communication skills. It is important to understand the differences between other cultures as interpreting what is foreign can change one’s views. As I learn the aspects of what makes cultures unique it would make an even greater experience if one day, I were to visit them.
