Assignment Takeaway #4

Advertisement in the last couple of decades have become more sought out when it pertains to selling or representing a variety of different ideas. Gender plays an important role when advertisements try to depict something. Often, men and women are represented in various ways across different cultures and these can lead to gender stereotyping. Not only that younger generations see how media portrays both men and women and it leads to unrealistic body standards. In this assignment North American and Japanese cultures will be compared with how the fashion industry advertisements portray men and women.

North American culture, when it comes to fashion and gender representation have created an image where women are in a way overly sexualized to be considered beautiful. Whether it be a provocative stance or unneeded overexposure, these advertisements generalize to women what the body should look like and this sometimes can be towards a slightly younger female audience. In comparison, Japanese culture holds women’s fashion in a higher regard while the men fashion styles tend to be represented in a more feminine way rather than masculine. Both cultures have different ways they represent gender in advertising fashion.

This assignment was personally relevant to me as I understand how various forms of advertisement can mislead people into thinking a certain way. For example, the negative aspect is that teenagers now see fashion as being more revealing and over sexualized. They have made clothes more appealing towards a certain body image and ostracize the others. My siblings who are 14 and 16 wear clothing that when I was a teenager did not entirely exist.
