Assignment Takeaway #1
Culture is a unique aspect of daily life around the world, every part has a different set of rules and social behaviors they abide by. Specifically, psychologists encounter the question If they are specific to one culture or if they are universal. Behavior is a major component in causing intercultural conflicts as individuals misconstrued the social constructs of culture. This assignment gives insight into Bennett’s six stages of intercultural sensitivities that occur in people. For example, Bennett’s first stage of intercultural sensitivity, denial of difference, was recognized as being apparent in a study, which was conducted by D.L. Rosenhan in 1973 and the article was titled Being sane in insane places. In some of the hospitals it was recorded that the hospital staff would beat patients for initiating a conversation. This leads to the dehumanizing of psychiatric patients because their behavior is a deficiency of intellect. It is interesting to think that there are people who believe this is normal, even today people are in denial about cultural differences like the case in 1973. This assignment felt personally relevant to me as it allowed me to analyze what stage or stages I fell under and question why I felt that way. The visual images below were taken from a convention in 2019, culture is made up of multiple contents of objective elements. Art, clothing, and texts are all integrated into different aspects of culture and provide a new insight in how people view other cultures.
