Data results from the gender stereotyping in the workplace

Item to Archive #7 was an activity based on gender stereotyping in occupations and it allowed for not only my responses but for a partner’s responses as well. My partner is of Mexican culture and my culture is North American. It was interesting to find that all but two of our responses were similar. When responding to these occupations with only male or female was slightly difficult because realistically the job can be done by either one. However, for the sake of this assignment instead of thinking too much into it we said the first gender that came to mind when hearing that occupation.

The two differences in our responses came from both sides. My partners response to the occupation of Lawyer was a female while mine was male. I asked why that was their first thought and the response they gave me was an interesting way to look at it. The other difference came from my response on the occupation of Architect where my first thought was female and vice versa for my partner.

During this activity I learned that even though today both genders can work for any occupation they choose. However, when viewing it from a singular and cultural perspective we find that in our minds we have a set stereotype that each gender falls under. The way we were raised and the cultural impact in our society shows how we view gender for occupations.
